Bükfürdő Grand Health Spa

• Open all year round

The Bükfürdő Thermal & Spa is the second largest in the country and one of the four most extensive in Europe. It covers such an impressive area that it even has its own postal code! Located in the small town of Bükfürdő, this thermal complex has become a leading name in Hungarian wellness and medical treatment.

The spa’s story begins in the 1950s when oil exploration led to the discovery of a thermal water source, exceptionally rich in minerals and gushing out at over 58°C. Recognizing the water’s therapeutic potential, the Hungarian government decided to develop the spring into a health resort. The first facilities opened in 1962 with the construction of the initial pools. Since then, the site has continually expanded to become the immense complex it is today, with its numerous indoor and outdoor pools, wellness area, and renowned clinic.

Upon arrival, you will be struck by the distinct smell of the medicinal water, faintly reminiscent of rotten eggs, which is caused by sulfur compounds that release volatile hydrogen sulfide. Once inside, be mindful not to linger too long in the 39°C thermal pool; the high concentration of active elements in the water lowers the oxygen content at the surface, which can cause a slight feeling of respiratory tightness if you keep your face too close to the water.

The spa boasts an impressive number of pools with varied temperatures and atmospheres, making it easy to enjoy a full day of relaxation, especially in the summer when the outdoor facilities are open. However, its sheer size can also be bewildering; even after a dozen visits, I still find myself getting turned around.

If you are looking for comfort and convenience, I highly recommend getting access to the sauna section. The “Sauna World” area has its own changing rooms and is centrally located within the complex, which makes getting around much simpler. To my knowledge, it is also one of the largest and most pleasant wellness areas in Hungary, combining indoor and outdoor facilities in a soothing setting. It is important to note before your visit that the wellness area at Bükfürdő is naturist.

Finally, beyond its pools and saunas, Bükfürdő is also a health resort recognized for its medical treatments. Its water, rich in calcium, magnesium, and fluorine, is particularly recommended for treating joint diseases and digestive disorders. The adjoining medical center offers a wide array of treatments, from mud baths to drinking cures, which are popular with both Hungarian and international visitors seeking therapeutic benefits.

Whether you are looking to relax, a passionate spa enthusiast, or in search of medical care, Bükfürdő is a must-visit destination that blends history, nature, modernity, and well-being.
