My passion for Hungarian baths began in 2011, during my first visit to Hungary, specifically in Szentes.

This activity is quite uncommon outside of Hungary. In my home country, France, which has one of the world’s largest network of thermal springs, these places are much rarer and more expensive. In contrast, most Hungarians can walk or cycle to these baths and enjoy a friendly moment of relaxation at a very reasonable price.

I’ve often had the chance to practice my beginner’s Hungarian in these places, sparking the curiosity of the local regulars. I even managed my first joke in Hungarian, making a few people laugh while chatting in a thermal pool!

The conviviality in these baths might surprise a foreign visitor, but it’s perfectly normal for a Hungarian. They may not realise they’re surrounded by countries lacking such places for socialising and relaxation.

During a low point, far from home and isolated by the language’s complexity, I discovered the virtues of thermal water and its relaxing and regenerative power, particularly in the magical setting of the thermal bath at the Szentes hospital annex, a Turkish bath imitation built in 1962.

At that time, I hadn’t planned to stay in Hungary long-term, just for a two-year mission. So, I returned to France in 2013, keeping a pleasant, enchanting, and addictive memory of this new discovery.

Three years later, I decided to return to Hungary for a second experience, after failing to find a suitable job in France. I made the almost impulsive decision to load up my Twingo with all my belongings and simply return there. However, unlike my first departure in 2011, I had no signed work contract or reserved hotel room waiting for me this time.

In the first few weeks after my arrival, I tried to give some French lessons here and there in Budapest, so I had free time to continue visiting the capital’s thermal baths before exploring those in the provinces.

It was precisely during this quest for experience that I encountered the lack of available information to guide non-Hungarian speakers. This made the ThermalHungary project an obvious choice for me.

Thus, I set the goal of creating the first comprehensive map of Hungarian thermal baths for European tourists.

After spending the first three years developing the project’s foundation and building a small team, ThermalHungary reached a significant milestone in 2024. We now offer the full range of tourist services available in Hungary in seven languages, all centred around the original theme of thermal baths, making Hungary a unique destination in the world.
