Nestled at the foot of Gellért Hill, the Rácz Fürdő, a 16th-century Ottoman bath, has undergone a tumultuous saga since the year 2000, a story weaving together grand ambitions, financial setbacks, and unexpected twists.
Closed in 2002 for renovation, the bath was set to be reborn in 2010 alongside an adjoining luxury hotel. However, a combination of administrative complications, the 2008 financial crisis, unforeseen archaeological discoveries, and the bankruptcy of the companies managing the project left the complex unfinished and deserted for over a decade.
Negotiations with potential investors, including from China, fell through. The city of Budapest, despite having established a public company in 2006 to manage all of the capital’s thermal baths (Budapest Gyógyfürdői és Hévizei Zrt.), failed in its initial attempts to repurchase the property, finally succeeding only in 2021.
Despite the site’s state of disrepair, BGYH, buoyed by strong financial results, launched an ambitious renovation estimated at 4.63 billion forints. The work, which began in 2023, aims to restore the location to its former glory.
The reopening, originally slated for 2025, now seems unlikely given the current state of the site. Once renovated, this grand and unique spa will once again offer visitors a luxurious experience that blends history with wellness.
Today, the Rácz stands at a crossroads between a glorious past and an uncertain future. Its resurrection will depend on political will, investment, and the passion to preserve this treasure of Budapest’s thermal heritage.
